What AEO actually is
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring pages, proof, and metadata so AI answer engines and assistants surface your brand as the direct response to a question. Classic SEO earns a blue-link click; AEO earns the sentence. Both matter — but increasingly only one of them gets read.
The four layers that decide who wins the answer
1. Entity clarity
Retrieval systems resolve “who you are” before they decide whether to quote you. That means explicit entity grounding: a consistent brand name, a canonical about page, Organization and Service JSON-LD, links from Wikipedia/Wikidata when you can earn them, and a stable set of sameAs references to your public profiles. If an LLM can't tell you apart from a competitor, it won't risk citing either of you.
2. Answer-first copy
The first paragraph under every H1 and H2 should answer the question in plain language, in roughly 40 to 80 words. Save the context, the competitive framing, and the storytelling for later in the page. Retrieval systems frequently grab the first extractable paragraph; burying the answer is the single most common reason brands with good content lose the snippet.
3. Extractable structure
Short paragraphs, bulleted lists, definition blocks, and explicit headings make content easier to lift cleanly into an answer. AddFAQPage and HowTo JSON-LD for pages that fit those patterns. Use DefinedTerm and DefinedTermSet when you're coining or defining vocabulary — it gives assistants a stable target to cite.
4. Trust signals the model can verify
Expert authors with Person schema, publication dates anddateModified, outbound citations to primary sources, and third-party validation (press, reviews, or community consensus on platforms like Reddit) all push you into the “safe to quote” bucket. Without them, even well-written pages stall behind older, more established sources.
A repeatable AEO workflow
- Pick 15–30 target queries your ideal buyer actually asks an assistant — category, comparison, and decision-stage.
- Run each query through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews and record which sources are cited today.
- Publish or rewrite the page that should rank for each query in an answer-first format, with the four layers above in place.
- Earn consensus — get the page referenced on Reddit, industry roundups, and review sites so retrieval systems see third-party agreement.
- Re-measure every 30 days. Track share of answer, which engine cited you, and whether the citation was your canonical URL or a competitor's page quoting you.
How to measure AEO
Rankings alone no longer tell the story. Track share of answer (the percentage of your target queries where any assistant cites you), citation frequency (how many citations per query on average), and click and assisted-pipeline attribution from organic traffic that arrived after an AI answer. Report on these alongside your classic SEO metrics; they're complementary, not substitutes.
Where most teams stall
Three patterns account for most stalled AEO programs: (1) burying the answer under brand intro copy, (2) no structured data on the pages being optimized, and (3) no third-party reinforcement — models see your page in isolation and prefer sources with external consensus. Fix those three and most categories move.
